His Garden Tips For July 2006
In spaces between the Runner Bean wigwams, I will probable sow
Lettuce and Radish etc.
Very early this month, I will sow another line of Broad Beans.
Although I am going to refer you to February 005 for method followed, I will
not dig out a trench etc. But just create a seed bed, where I had the Kale . Or another crop that has been cleared, and apply a
dressing of Grow more. At a handful to a three foot run.
Another line of peas will be sown this month. I will prepare the
bed, as for Broad Beans above. Using ground from which an earlier crop has been
cleared.
Peas sown last month are up. I will make up a weak mixture of manure by addinghalf a spade of well-rotted farmyard manure, to a two
gallon can of water. Apply, by watering beside the plants, allowing the water
to soak into the pea bed. When they are established, I will add a spade full of
manure, and apply as above.
Another sowing of Runner Beans will be made, about the middle of
the month. Using the wigwam method. Please see April
005 for preparation of bed, May 005 for sowing of Runner Beans. June 005 for
wigwam method
Below Savoy Cabbage potted up, To prepare
a cabbage patch, please see April 006.

The plants will be planted out approx. 16 inches apart, in rows 18
inches apart.

Above, Brussels Sprouts. The plants will
be planted out approx. 14 inches apart, in rows approx. 14 inches apart.

Above , Broccoli. The plants
will be planted out approx. 16 inches apart in rows approx. 16 inches apart.

Above
Suttons f h I
s p I. Will be planted out
approx. 14 inches apart, 14 inches between rows.
The plants
will be watered in, and watered every day or so, depending upon
the weather. Until established.
As I have limited space, I plant closer than some gardeners. If one
has room, more space between plants will do no harm.
Carrots prefer a loam soil.
I prepare a very fine tilth, on land that was not manured last year. The seed will be sown in drills half an
inch deep, in rows 6 or 8 inches apart. When the plants are sturdy enough to
handle, I will thin out to two three inches apart.
Turnip will be sown about the middle of the month. The seed will be
sown thinly, in a well prepared seed bed, half an inch deep. In rows approx. 12
inches apart. The plants will be thinned out to 6 or 7 inches apart.
Sometime
this month I will apply farmyard manure to the Rhubarb. A fork full to each crown.
At the begging this month, I
will sow Dwarf French Beans. A reasonably fine tilth
will prepared. I will sow three lines, in drills 3
inches deep, leaving 6 inches between drills. Should one require more than one
row, I would leave 3 feet between rows.
The Parsnips are now ready to thin out. I will thin out to approx.
4 inches apart. Parsnips do not take kindly to transplanting. However, I have
had reasonable results, and will transplant the sturdiest of the thinnings The plants will be
watered in, and kept moist until established.
Beetroot will be thinned, leaving approx. 4 inches between plants,
and watered in.

The Grapes are now forming, and will be watered every other day.
Should the leaves begin to wilt, I would water more often.
I will continue hoe between the crops with a Dutch hoe.
As Runner Beans, Broad Beans and Pea pods begin to form, I will
water moderately every other day or so, depending upon the
weather.
I should have finished cutting Asparagus ten days ago. However, have left it rather this year. A heavy dressing of
Derris Dust, or the equivalent will be applied, to
combat the asparagus Beetle. The fern will be left to grow, and cut down
latter. I usually finish cutting, the second week of this month.
A Herb that can be sown
this month, is Summer Savory. I would sow in drills quarter inch deep, thin
seedlings out to approx. 14 inches apart. Leaving 14 inches
between rows.
